SFK Laxen

Göta älv (SFK Laxen)

Västra Götalands län / Lilla Edet municipality.

Salmon has been fished in the Göta River since time immemorial. In older writings you can read how fishing was conducted and how ownership was all the way back to the 13th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, fishing rights were held by both private stakeholders as well as the crown (the Swedish state). In 1908, c. Emil Haeger, founder of Lilla Edets Pappersbruk, sold the rights to salmon fishing and the waterfall to the Swedish state. Today, it is Vattenfall and Lilla Edet municipality that are fishing rights holders for the current salmon fishing that Sportfiskeklubben Laxen manages and administers.

Göta älv has almost always provided good salmon fishing except in the 50s and 60s when industrial pollutants impaired reproduction and made the salmon increase minimal. has meant that the genuine Göta river salmon probably does not exist today. When this was discovered, they switched to Säveålax, a salmon that is genetically very similar to our old Göta älvlax. Säveålaxen is also a slightly earlier salmon than Laganlaxen, so now we get salmon already in May instead of as before at the end of June.

Today we have a fantastically clean water compared to the end of the 60's, when it was a sight depth of only about 10 cm. Today we have a visibility depth of 1.5 meters in favorable weather and the water can actually be drunk. SFK Laxen has been involved in salmon fishing since 1983 when the club was formed and spends about 9000 hours in non-profit work at the facility. All in order for the fishing guests to have as good a fishing experience as possible. Since the start -83, the curve for caught salmon has risen significantly. From having initially caught about 200 salmon per year, we are now at 700-1000 salmon per year. The club's goal is for fishing to return to old-fashioned figures in terms of fishing volume and size, and for us to become one of Sweden's best salmon waters. The Göta River has been one of Europe's best salmon waters, but that was when ...
